Age at the featured milestone
60s & 70s

Read the context below: a new beginning, a breakthrough and recognition are different moments.

The milestone, with context

José Saramago was born in 1922. His autobiographical account describes work as a mechanic, translator, editor and journalist alongside writing. His later novels included Baltasar and Blimunda in 1982, The Year of the Death of Ricardo Reis in 1984 and The Stone Raft in 1986. He received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1998, at 75.

He had published much earlier, so this was an expanding later career rather than a first attempt at writing. Those decades of work and reading belong in the picture. A later chapter can draw on interests developed across several occupations.

What you can take from it

Our takeaway: consider how your different experiences might belong together. A career that has changed direction can supply several ways to see a subject. You can bring those perspectives into a story, a lesson or a useful resource.

Try a small next chapter of your own

  1. Map three chapters of your life

List a job, a place and an interest that shaped what you notice.

  2. Find their connection

Ask what question or experience runs through all three.

  3. Make a short explanation

Write or record one example that helps someone else see the connection.

Make room for your version of success

These are selected lives, not a formula or a deadline. Resources, health, support, opportunity and luck matter. Your next chapter might be a steadier routine, a meaningful friendship, a creative practice or a contribution in your community.
