Read the context below: a new beginning, a breakthrough and recognition are different moments.

The milestone, with context

In 2005, Katalin Karikó and Drew Weissman published research on modifications to messenger RNA. Karikó, born in January 1955, was 50. The Nobel Prize account explains that their findings helped overcome an obstacle to using laboratory-produced mRNA. They shared the 2023 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for discoveries that enabled effective mRNA vaccines against COVID-19.

The discovery and the later vaccines were separate stages involving many researchers and organizations. Her milestone illustrates both the long development of an idea and the value of a collaborator with complementary expertise.

What you can take from it

Our takeaway: when progress stalls, seek someone who can examine the problem from another angle. Persistence works best alongside feedback, evidence and a willingness to revise the approach. Continuing a project is a decision you can reassess as circumstances change.

Try a small next chapter of your own

  1. Describe one question precisely

Write what you are trying to learn and what you have already tried.

  2. Invite another perspective

Ask a knowledgeable colleague or learning group what you may be overlooking.

  3. Choose a bounded next experiment

Define a small task, a review date and what evidence would change your mind.

Make room for your version of success

These are selected lives, not a formula or a deadline. Resources, health, support, opportunity and luck matter. Your next chapter might be a steadier routine, a meaningful friendship, a creative practice or a contribution in your community.
